Novogrudok celebrated the 74th anniversary of the liberation of the town from Nazi invaders. The main event of the celebration was the meeting for the commemoration of soldiers-liberators. Veterans, the district administration, representatives of labor collectives, public associations, children and youth gathered in Lenin square.
The head of Novogrudok district Mr. Anatoly Markevich said in his opening speech:
July 8, 1944 was not just an ordinary summer day. This day will forever be engraved in the history of Novogrudok Land as the memory of the great event – the liberation of our town from German-fascist invaders. Time furthers us from this date with each passing year. But the heroism of the Soviet soldiers who brought freedom to the earth can never be forgotten. During the Great Patriotic War Novogrudok was under German occupation since July 4, 1941. Since that day, the regime of terror and violence against people was established in the district. However, the residents of the town and district were not conquered. In Novogrudok and neighboring territories there were 6 partisan brigades and 26 partisan groups, Novogrudok and Lyubcha Komsomol underground district committees, many anti-fascist groups, where people fought with the enemy, caused him significant damage. Over 45 thousand people died during the war in Novogrudok and the district. This figure is comparable to the number of the population of Novogrudok at present. About 60% of the housing stock was destroyed in the town. Fully or partially the Nazis destroyed 16 villages.
Much is changing, but one thing remains unchanged. This is people’s attitude to their small Homeland. Novogrudok district is not just a place where we live. This is a common house, uniting people of different destinies, characters, generations into a coherent whole. We are confident in the future, we are implementing new plans and projects. On this bright, festive day I sincerely wish all the veterans, residents of the district health, happiness, prosperity and peaceful sky! Happy Liberation Day!
On this day the veterans of the district got awards for the personal contribution to the Patriotic education of young people.
During the meeting, the best workers of Novogrudok agricultural sector were also awarded.
The gratitude of the Grodno regional Council of the Belarusian public Association of veterans was given to the correspondent of the newspaper «New Life» Olga pisar, who took second place in the first stage of the photo contest «My small Motherland» in the veteran organization of the Grodno region.
The memory of those who died during the Great Patriotic war, those who died in the post-war period, and veterans who did not live to see this day was honored with a minute of silence and laying a garland of Glory, wreaths and flowers to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the monument to soldiers-internationalists.
