International poetry festival “Novogrudok Land – My Native Place…”, dedicated to the 220th birthday anniversary of Adam Mickiewicz took place in Novogrudok in October 5-7.
The main day of celebration — October 6 – began with the opening ceremony. A bright theatrical prologue based on Adam Mickiewicz’ works was prepared by actors and musicians of the honored collective of the Republic of Belarus «Belarusian state academic musical theater», and the role of the famous poet was played by the actor of Janka Kupała National Theatre Roman Podolyako.
The celebration was attended by the Chairman of the Novogrudok district Executive Committee Anatoly Markevich, The Senior Manager of the Grodno Regional Executive Committee Igor Popov, the Deputy of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus of the sixth convocation Olga Popko, the Consul General of the Republic of Poland in Grodno Jaroslav Ksienzhek, famous natives of Novogrudok, guests from other districts.
— In the world there are places associated with outstanding historical figures, architectural monuments and museums. And it’s just wonderful when all these are at one place. Such a place in Belarus, no doubt, was the Novogrudok, – said Anatoly Markevich, during the opening celebration. — Our city is one of the most ancient and important historical centers of Belarus. And today Novogrudok is one of the most popular tourist centers not only among Belarusians, but also among foreign guests. It is not surprising, because there are many places visited by numerous famous people.
– Novogrudok is Adam Mickiewicz’ Motherland. His name has been known to almost everyone for more than two centuries, – said the head of the district. The poet, publicist, Professor of two universities, public and political figure, A. Mitskevich kept in touch with many great people of his time such as Alexander Pushkin, Frederic Chopin, Napoleon Orda, Mikhail Oginsky and others. We are very proud that the name of our countryman, who glorified his native land – Novogrudok land – is on a par with the names of the greatest writers, classics of world literature. Novogrudok land, its people, landscapes and legends were the main source of inspiration for the poet.
Adam Mickiewicz’ name is a cult not only for Novogrudok, but for all of us, – said Igor Popov. — His works enriched the Polish literary language; it helped the further development of Belarusian literature. Today, his works are fully or partially translated into 22 languages, as well as into the language of cinema and theater. Novogrudok keeps the memory of the prominent countryman with great love. In 2018, the Grodno Regional Executive Committee allocated funds for the repair of the Museum of A.Mitskevich. Grodno region is a land which is rich in history and names, and one of them is the name of Adam Mickiewicz.
